An epic science fiction film Interstellar has surpassed the 10 million audience mark getting huge popularity since another Hollywood blockbuster Avatar record over 10 million viewers in 2009, except animation Frozen in late 2014.
The Christopher Nolan movie shows many fundamentals of modern physics to explain the abstract concept of the study and audiences can see signs of the director's effort. I'd like to talk about chaos theory which popularly referred to as the butterfly effect not modern physics itself. In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.
This is another story. Recently I've ever had a conversation about key factors of game success with the CEO of a gaming company. What is the most important factor for game success? It's hard to find a unique thing in recent successful games why they continue to grow in popularity and make good money compared to other globally existing popular games. Are those successes caused by external factors only?
In conclusion, successful games are fun and they can be from one of the internal factors of the games or balance of the factors. Of course, making good concepts and tuning game rules are hard work, and balancing does not necessary. But we have seen a few newly designed games making a good score. There is no such thing as a perfectly balanced game. Despite the best efforts of designers, some characters or strategies end up being stronger than others, both in specific areas and across the board. Even the most popular games can make their users leave due to unsuitable years of patch and wrong balance. Balance is the most important factor in the game.
It is much easier said than done. The initial value of game design can have a decisive effect on the entire game and its success like the butterfly effect. If the male leading role of Interstellar didn't tell his daughter to interpret a message from the ghost, the history of the world couldn't have been changed. Games are not made according to a similar formula. Of course, there is no perfect formula for game success and game designers can make successful games with a slight variation. Both game development and investment in game development may seem like an attractive job thanks to their uncertainties.
