Princess Jeongmyeong (Lee Yeon Hee), the Crown Princess, and their children reach Gangwha Island thanks to Grand Prince Bongrim (Lee Min Ho).
Fierce Battles break out between Joseon and Hong Taiji (the Emperor of the Qing dynasty)'s army in the island and Namhan Mountain Fortress.
Many people are so dejected as the nation's armed forces keep losing the battles and a lot of innocent people are killed.
Crown Prince Sohyeon (Baek Sung Hyun) resolves not to forgive Kim Ja Jeom (Jo Min Ki) and the big merchant who think of their own interests first.
This is called the 'Humiliation of Samjeondo.
I remember I tried to memorize it in junior high for a test.
Historically Injo never used a word of surrender.
Such a loser!! :(
Eight years later...
Injo complains of chest pains the day when his two sons come back to Joseon.
I'm sure Jeongmyeong is over forty years old on the TV series 'Hwajung' but she looks like she's in her 20s.
Tooooo pretty lol

King Injo (Kim Jae Won) is indecisive over two opinions between the hawks and the doves. Kang Joo Sun (Jo Sung Ha) visits Injo to ask him to let his oldest son go to make deals with the delegate from Qing and Hong Joo Won (Seo Kang Joon) sends a man who is disguised as the Crown Prince to save his life.
While there is an all-out, full-scale war with the Korean army against the Chinese army, Kang In Woo (Han Joo Wan) fights desperately to purge away his father's sins.
The firing squad loses its power because it rains cats and dogs. The King and Sohyeon lament at the top of their voice due to news of the utter defeat.
Gulping down tears, Injo goes to Samjeondo to conclude a pact for the relations of sovereign and subject. The man in white bows low to the ground before the emperor to demonstrate submission as a subject. He beats his head against the ground with his forehead bleeding.
The two sons of the King are taken hostage by the order of Hong Taiji.
